Meet Shelileah Newman, MD, August 2018 Provider of the Month

We are proud of our providers and all the fantastic work they do in our community. Throughout 2018, we’ll continue to feature interviews starting from our newest provider about life outside of the office.

This month, Shelileah Newman, MD is our August 2018 Physician of the Month. Dr. Newman has been with SERO since November 2015 and treats patients at Carolinas Healthcare System Stanly.

I was born and raised in a small town in northern Florida. I have a small but tight knit family, am blessed to have a wonderful husband, and two beautiful children, 3 years and 6 months, who are the light of my life. I attended the University of Florida College of Medicine and spent 4 years in Chapel Hill for residency at the University of North Carolina. I returned to Florida to practice for several years,  and had the wonderful opportunity to return to North Carolina to practice in Albemarle, near my husband’s home town of Charlotte.

I remember vividly my grandfather going through treatment for colon cancer when I was very young. He went through surgery and chemotherapy, and I recall him going from larger than life, to very frail while he was undergoing treatment. I was sitting at his bedside in the hospital one afternoon and  said “Papa, I will find a way to help you when I grow up”. I then had several other family members go through their own journeys with cancer treatment. I had always been interested in medicine and engineering, and received my bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. I was thrilled when I learned about radiation oncology, which was the perfect blend of both!

I love spending time with family, and my little ones keep me pretty busy!

I’m a Floridian and I love pretty much anything to do with the water. I try to migrate my way to the coast several times a year or to the Caribbean as I visited family there frequently growing up. There is absolutely nothing as calming as listening to the waves roll onto the beach or watching the sun rise on the coast.  Gives you an appreciation for God’s great creation. We also love animals, and always have our fur baby with us. So I suppose I really have three kids!
