How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

Radiation therapy works by exposing cancer cells to lethal amounts of radiation. Over time, this radiation destroys cancer cells and shrinks tumors. Though radiotherapy is a localized treatment, healthy cells can still be damaged by the radiation. When this happens, patients experience unwanted side effects.

What Are the Side Effects of Radiotherapy?

Some Lancaster Radiation Therapy Center patients experience no side effects. Others experience mild side effects like fatigue and skin problems (e.g. blistering, peeling, itching) or side effects specific to their treatment. Radiation to the abdomen, for instance, may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues.

If you experience any discomfort during your radiotherapy treatment, tell your SERO provider immediately. Your provider can adjust your radiation dose accordingly or prescribe medications to calm your symptoms.
