SERO is characterized by outstanding physicians who prioritize patient health and optimal care. To deliver best in class treatment, our doctors seek to build meaningful relationships with patients, providing personal care that requires knowing patients on a personal level.

As part of that effort, we feature interviews with our physicians over the course of the year. Just as we ask patients to share their lives with us, we in our physicians want to do the same. We conduct interviews with doctors to learn more about their lives outside of the office. We believe that with deeper patient-doctor relationships come greater levels of trust followed by greater levels of comfort and care.

This month, meet Dr. Greg Mitro, M.D.

Gregory C. Mitro, MD

Tell us about your background:

I took a bit of a long way around to medical school.  I graduated with a double major in Computer Science and Statistics from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  Towards the completion of college, I became interested in medical school, and this required an additional year of study to meet the prerequisites.  Eventually, I was accepted at the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  That was a great place to live with the smell of chocolate in the air every day. It was in my third year of medical school that I was exposed to radiation oncology and realized I had found my future career.  Upon graduation from medical school, I enrolled in a radiation oncology residency program at Wake Forest University.  It was at that time that I realized I had found the location of my future career as I fell in love with North Carolina.  All of this eventually led to me practicing with SERO out of Charlotte.

When not at work, how do you enjoy spending your time?

In my time away from work I enjoy baking, yard keeping, various home improvement projects, golfing, and fishing. I also enjoy working on cars and riding my motorcycle.  I have two best friends that live with me, a Weimaraner (Gabrielle) and a German Shorthair Pointer (Francis).  We have a great time exploring the woods around my house. We also love trips to the beach!

What do you enjoy most about being a radiation oncologist?

I feel like the luckiest man in the world practicing as a radiation oncologist. I am privileged to get to know my patients and their families as individuals. I enjoy participating in community projects and patient support groups. What we do as radiation oncologists is so much more than the technical aspects of what we practice. We have a chance to make a difference in people’s lives every day. Sometimes that involves the treatment we help deliver, however other times it may be just a quiet conversation or sometimes even just listening. Though the days may be long, I never leave work without feeling that I have made a difference in someone’s life.
